JOB DESCRIPTION: The High School Literature and Composition Teacher reports to the Head of the High School and is responsible for guiding students to achievement of the Student Learning Objectives (SLOs) and the 2019-2024 Strategic Plan.
In keeping with our strengths-based model, we intend to empower faculty to teach within their expert subject areas. There may be instances where, due to scheduling, teachers may be asked to teach a subject outside of their preferred content area. We will provide appropriate support and professional development in these circumstances.
In-person, on-campus teaching is an expectation for all faculty and staff in the 2022-2023 academic year. In the event that the school as a whole, or parts of the school, are required to close due (due to COVID or wildfires) curricula is to be delivered via the Distance Learning framework.
The following is a summary of job duties and responsibilities:
- Providing planned, structured, and research-based instruction to students in a way that best meets their individual needs and profile
- Collaborating with co-teachers as appropriate
- Embodying and supporting the Sterne School Mission Statement, Diversity Statement and goals, and Core Values
- Supporting the Wellness Initiative and Social-Emotional Learning goals and objectives
- Preparing and following course descriptions that include course objectives, materials used, and grading scale
- Substituting as needed
- Carefully and consistently recording assignments, grades, and progress on student assignment sheets and on the Learning Management System (Blackbaud)
- Preparing quarterly report cards which are consistent with course descriptions, lesson plans, and information as part of concise and regular communication with parents
- Providing supervision of students at all times, and always maintaining clearly stated classroom limits in supportive, firm ways
- Maintaining an organized, orderly classroom which sets executive functioning standards for students, including care for books, computers, iPads, materials, and the school site
- Participating in parent/teacher/student conferences throughout the school year
- Participating in Professional Learning Committee meetings and events
- Supporting Technology and Assistive Technology use in the classroom
- Planning for and participating in Experiential Week activities
Being an active part of the Sterne School community means participating and attending events such as:

- Back to School Picnic
- Field Day
The idea candidate will have experience teaching Literature & Composition to neurodiverse students. Neurodiversity includes, but is not limited to ADD/ADHD, language based learning disabilities, anxiety, and depression
Experience working with students with learning disabilities.
Special Education background
3+ years of teaching experience
