See Sterne

In 2017, Sterne signed a 99-year lease that brought us to our home at 838 Kearny Street. Our vibrant, urban campus sits in the heart of San Francisco, at the hub of North Beach, Chinatown, and the Financial District. Recent campus renovations and upgrades have included opening our state-of-the-art Performing Arts & Athletics Center in 2023, which features a full gymnasium, digital film lab and studio, black box theater, and music room/recording studio; The Gina & Stuart Peterson Fine Arts and Sciences Wing which opened in 2018; dynamic communal spaces in our outdoor courtyard and rooftop; and much more.

Tours of the Sterne campus are thoughtfully-curated small group visits, tailored to families who have already completed an initial Inquiry Form. Get a glimpse of what Sterne offers in the slideshow below. If you feel that Sterne may be the right fit for your student, we encourage you to fill out our online Inquiry Form to take the first step of our admissions process—we hope to see you on campus soon!

Classrooms

Sterne's classrooms employ modular furniture to create collaborative work spaces for students and faculty.

Classrooms

Each teacher sets up their classroom differently, depending on the material being learned, and students display their individuality and creativity throughout.

Lower & Middle School

Small class sizes in our Lower School and Middle School allow teachers to connect with each student, focusing on the strengths and challenges of their unique learning profile.

High School

Sterne provides students with a comprehensive and challenging college preparatory curriculum through project-based instruction designed and led by expertly-trained faculty.

Science Lab

The Gina & Stuart Peterson Fine Arts and Sciences Wing opened in 2018 and includes a state-of-the-art science lab, where dynamic project-based learning makes STEM curriculum come alive.

Learning Center
For students with literacy, math, and attentional challenges, Sterne’s strengths-based, nurturing approach focuses on the abilities and interests of these young learners. A dynamic, project-based learning model provides opportunities for students to receive support as they solve problems, apply creating thinking strategies, and discover the joy in learning.
Maker Space

An expansive Maker Space provides our students with the opportunity to work individually and collaboratively on creative thinking, interactive, hands-on STEAM projects.

Art Studio

The Gina & Stuart Peterson Fine Arts and Sciences Wing on our campus houses a large visual arts studio where students can engage in painting, sketching, sculpture, fashion design, and more.

Gallery Art Walk

The Fine Arts and Sciences Wing features an entire hallway with spaces designed for displaying and exhibiting student artwork throughout the year. Each school year culminates with the Visual Art and Maker Faire in May, an event where our gymnasium is transformed into a massive gallery, displaying artwork from all students in all mediums made throughout the year.

Film Studio

We opened our new Performing Arts & Athletic Center in 2023, which includes a state-of-the-art film lab and studio with green screen wall, custom lighting, and control room. Students from all grades can take film classes, and their work is showcased at our annual Fall and Spring Student Film Festivals.

Music Studio & Practice Room

Sterne opened the Ed McManis Music Room in 2023, which includes a classroom and two sound-proofed practice rooms/recording studios. We have a dedicated music teacher who teaches all divisions and stages two schoolwide performances each year.

Black Box Theater and Drama Room

Our Black Box Theater opened in 2023 and is a dynamic space for students to hone their craft on stage and behind the scenes. Students in all grades can participate in Drama classes, and their work is showcased twice at year at our Fall and Spring Art Showcases.

Gymnasium

Sterne's new Kunze Family and Laflamme Family Gymnasium is the centerpiece of our new Performing Arts & Athletics Center. The space is home to a variety of communal events, including all-school assemblies, pep rallies, dances, and the many co-ed club and competitive league sports we offer.

Competitive and Club Sports

Sterne's school pride is visible throughout our campus, and our mascot was thoughtfully chosen since dolphins are known for their sociable nature and high intelligence. When our Dolphins take to the gym, they participate in club and competitive league sports that include basketball, volleyball, team handball, futsal, table tennis, dodgeball, and yoga.

Welcome Center

The Welcome Center is the hub of our new Performing Arts & Athletic Center. As a gathering point that connects our gym, music, film, and drama spaces, it's the perfect venue for students to meet and socialize, as well as a gathering place for parent socials and alumni events.

Lower School Courtyard

Our campus features a dedicated 4th–5th grade courtyard that includes a play structure and green outdoor activity space. Upcoming renovations will add interactive sensory boards, modular furniture, and a garden wall.

Breezeway Work and Social Spaces

Our upper floor classrooms are connected by outdoor breezeways equipped with round tables for collaborative project work. In these spaces, students can often be found socializing, holding club sessions or affinity group meetings, and connecting with teachers.

Rooftop Green

Our rooftop has been customized to include a unique outdoor green space where students and classes can gather. The area will be even more community-oriented when we install modular seating and vertical gardens in Fall 2024.

Rooftop Court

In addition to the communal green space, Sterne's rooftop features a basketball and handball court, and hosts P.E. and lunch/recess time.

The Heart of San Francisco!
